Match Trivia
The game between these clubs on Kinning Park resulted in a win for the Rangers by five goals to none. There was a large gathering of spectators between 2000 and 4000 persons being present. Neither club was fully represented the Volunteers however suffering most in this respect. They were without the services of four of their first team while the Rangers were minus Heggie. Cameron who took the place of the latter played an excellent game so that the Kinning Park team was in no way weakened. The Rangers were the first to show up after the kick off by an unsuccessful run on the Volunteers goal. The visitors retaliated with a like result but in the course of a few minutes the Rangers again got possession of the leather and a smart shot by McGregor took effect. From the kick off in mid-field the Rangers soon managed to the front and Inglis succeeded in lowering the colours of the Volunteers a second time. The local men for a time continued to press their opponents and a smart shot was cleverly held by Stevenson. Another try passed the side of the posts. The kick from goal was well followed up and a combined run on the Rangers goal compelled Chalmers to use his hands. A counter run was made by Hamilton and Inglis and the ball being cleverly centred by the former, McGregor who was in waiting sent it between the posts. It was however ruled that he was offside and the goal disallowed. After a good run by Gossland for the Rangers McIntyre and Weir showed up well for the 3rd and an easy chance of scoring was lost. The Rangers next had a number of tries and from a corner kick the third goal was secured. At this time some little amusement was caused through a misunderstanding in the centre of the field. The Rangers claimed a ‘foul’ and had taken up their position for a free kick when it was ruled by the referee that a Ranger and not a 3rd man had fouled the leather and the kick off was awarded to their opponents. From this advantage a goal was almost secured but Chalmers saved his charge in fine style. The second position of the game was keenly contested but as in the first half the Rangers had the best of the lay and scored another two points while the 3rd failed in their efforts to get through. In less than a minute from the re-starting Hamilton scored a fourth goal. Strenuous efforts were afterwards made by both elevens and the Rangers through the instrumentality of McGregor again found an opening in the 3rd defence. Towards the close the Volunteers made repeated efforts at scoring but Chalmers, Duncan and McIntyre successfully bailed all their attempts. In the Rangers front division Inglis and Cameron played a capital game throughout. The forwards of the 3rd L.R.V. lacked combination though they occasionally showed good passing. Kennedy at halfback played with his usual dash but was not well supported.
