Match Trivia

These clubs met I n the Charity Cup competition at Hampden Park last night. The weather was of a most disagreeable nature, and it was unfortunate that rain should have militated against a big attendance, as it did against good play. The attendance under the circumstances was good, and at kick-off about 5000 were present. In a rainstorm Rangers kicked off against the wind, but Porter got away, and Drummond had to concede a corner to clear. For the first few minutes there was little inequality in the play, and the 3d Lanark held their more fancied opponents somewhat easily; but ultimately the Ibrox team began to show superiority, and ten minutes from the start Neil scored with a ridiculously easy shot, which Milne made no apparent effort to clear. The game was very fast, and brimming with exciting incidents, but the greasy surface of the pitch gave the teams considerable trouble in playing the ball. Quarter of an hour from halftime Smith fouled the ball with his hands within the 12-yards line, and a penalty kick was given, McCue took the kick and equalised the game. At halftime the score was one goal each. The game had barely been resumed when A Smith scored from a fine cross by McPherson, and ten minutes later Hamilton scored a second. Rangers maintained their advantage and the Third had few opportunities of testing Dickie. Campbell scored a fourth. For the Rangers Drummond, Neil and Mitchell were best in the back division, while the forwards played a good combined game. The front rank of the Third never seemed to settle, and the best of a poor quintets was Porter. Thompson was the shining light in the defence. The Result was – Rangers 4 goals: Third Lanark 1 goal.
