Match Trivia

There never was much sense of serious contest in the game at Ibrox. From the time that Rangers scored their first goal – which was seven minutes after the start – Third Lanark were going uphill. And they could not climb. For the greater part of the match the visitors played without Riley, who as the result of a strained groin, had to quit after Rangers had scored number two. With Hempsey unable to get away from work, Rangers, who had expected him, were given too short notice to get their hands on Lock, but fortunately, Miller of Dumbarton – a real good one – was on the ground and readily consented to assist. Manderson had to stand down with a chill. Graham was a late arrival, and Third Lanark had to change their forward line. With a fairish breeze behind them, the Ibrox forwards swung into the Cathkin defence with the all appearance of scorers. Within seven minutes, as I remarked, the opening goal arrived. Bowie finished some nice combination by driving the ball at Turnbull, who saved but McLean caught the rebound and netted. Seventeen minutes later, and after Lennon and Orr had been in the thick of it, the former carried the ball on with a hand a few yards from goal. Blair’s penalty shot was returned by Turnbull, and the Rangers back looked like failing to profit by the new chance, when Dixon galloped in and made certain. A little excitement arose when the home defence muddled things badly, and were lucky to escape loss. On top of this Rangers got a free kick, and before Turnbull had taken stock of things Gordon had swept the ball into the net. Then Donnachie took a Cunningham pass and dribbled through the defence to lay the ball at McLean’s feet in such a position that the centre could not miss – which he didn’t. Meantime Riley had retired, and he did not resume, so that Third Lanark, even with the wind in the second half, could make little impression. Rangers were restrained though frequently dangerous, but their best shot hit one or other of the defenders, which was bad enough for the defenders, but not so bad as the loss of more goals. It was no test for Rangers. The Cathkin forwards – five or four – were held, and their half-backs failed to prevent the home front line catching Lennon and Orr unprotected. Cunningham and Donnachie showed some capital wing play, and McLean was taking the passes and going on in something like his old style. The Rangers’ halfs were ‘on their own,’ and McQueen did well the little there was to do. Miller was largely a spectator.
