Match Trivia

The Rangers and the 3rd L.R.V. played a friendly game on Cathkin Park before 2000 spectators. The Volunteers won the toss and the Rangers kicked off. At the outset the Rangers pressed hard, and in a few minutes Downie had to concede a corner to save his charge. Nothing resulted from the advantage gained, the ball being sent behind. The Volunteers goal was once more assailed, but the backs relieved in time. So far the Rangers played a determined game, and seemed anxious to redeem their past failures. The right wing of the Third, Marshall and Hannah, tried in vain to get away, but Donald Gow, with that coolness which distinguishes him, returned the ball beautifully. About twelve minutes had now elapsed, and the heavy work which the Ibrox Park men put in was now beginning to tell on them. The result was that their opponents took full advantage, and after a run the whole length of the field, the ball was passed over to the left. W Johnstone rushed in quickly, and sent in a quick smart shop, which Nicol caught in the nick of time and fisted out. An exciting piece of play followed. The Rangers had a run down, nut it was only momentarily, for the ball was taken back by the Volunteers front division. Morrison now afforded his team a fine opportunity to score, but the ball was fumbled. A corner was conceded, however and after some exciting play in front of goal, Morrison sent the ball through amidst applause, thus scoring the first point for the Volunteers 15 minutes after the start. Nicol could not have saved the point. The home side kept crowding round the Rangers goal, and McRitchie form halfback sent in a well timed shot, which was equally well saved. Following this, Oswald sent in a strong shot which, unfortunately for his side, went behind. The Volunteers however were not to be denied, and crowding round their opponents goal Morrison sent in another beauty, beating Nicol for the second time within 20 minutes. The success of the Volunteers was now assured. They kept pegging away with great determination, and Oswald, who was playing a very effective game in the centre, sent in a grand shot, which Nicol caught dexterously, and saved at the expense of a corner. With the exception of the first 10 minutes, the Rangers were not it in, and although they had clearly the sympathy of the crowd, nothing could encourage them to put on a point. Half-an-hour of the game had now gone, when the Volunteers, who in the meantime had been subjected to some pressure, came away in a body. They succeeded effectively in passing all opposition, and Nicol recognising the danger which was likely to follow, rushed out of his goal – he came out too far, however – and was met by the opposing forwards, who took the ball from him, and Oswald without much ceremony sent it spinning through, there being no opposition, and the Volunteers thus scored their third point, making success doubly sure. Shortly before the call of halftime their forwards crowded round Nicol, who was placed ‘hors de combat,’ and something resembling a regular Rugby maul ensured. At length the Volunteers got the ball clear away, and shot through the goal for a forth time. The home side had one or two more chances, but there was no further scoring, and at halftime the result was – 3rd L.R.V. 4 goals, Rangers 0. In the second half the Volunteers had a slight breeze of wind in their favour, and it was confidently expected that they would materially increase their score. The play at the outset certainly gave promise that this anticipation would be fulfilled, for only two minutes had elapsed from the time the ball had been set in motion when Oswald scored a fifth point with an easy shot. As the game progressed the Volunteers did not seem so anxious to score and evidently rested content with the laurels won. After twenty minutes the Rangers sent the ball through the 3rd Lanark goal, bat as afoul had been given previously, the point was not allowed. The Rangers however stuck pertinacious to the ball after it had been sent into play, and Fraser on the right, getting past Rae scored the first point for the ‘Light Blues’. The result was greeted with great applause, hats and sticks being flourished in the air. This success seemed to give the Rangers new life for they played harder than before, and although never becoming positively dangerous gave their opponents a pretty hot time of it. The Volunteers however, returned to the attack, and kept up a warm siege, but to no purpose. Towards the close the Rangers had one or two pretty runs, which were completely spoiled by their opponent’s backs, who played a very safe game. The remainder of the play calls for no further description. The Volunteers did not show the combination which characterised their play in the first half, while the Rangers put on a spurt occasionally. The result was – 3rd L.R.V. 5 goals, Rangers 1 goal
