Match Trivia
Twenty minutes late the Rangers, having lost the toss, kicked off towards the west goal. Davie and D McPherson early initiated a run, but it ended by the ball being sent over the line. Kerr next had a chance, but Anderson returned. D McPherson, who was lying handy, got on the ball, and sent in a beauty, which almost had the desired effect. The Third next had a look in, Stevenson being prominent. He passed to Oswald, but Drummond intercepted, and again play was transferred to midfield. A fee kick brought the Third back, but Mitchell relieved. The Rangers once again took up the running, and two corners in succession were awarded them, but they were fruitless. Some nice centre play by Oswald, who accepted a pass from Blair, raised the excitement. He cleverly threaded his way through the opposing defence, but his final shot was wide. The Rangers now put on the pressure severly, and had Anderson been in anything but the best form, they would have scored. After 25 minutes had gone J McPherson finished up a perfect siege by landing the ball in the net. First goal for Rangers. Even play followed, each goal being assailed in turn. Coming away in a body, the Rangers forwards made matters warm for the Third. From a nicely judged pass by Barker, Davie scored their second goal. The Third strove hard to improve their position. Then forwards could make no impression on the Rangers defence however. Halftime result – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 0 goals. After rather a prolonged interval the game was resumed. A run by Stirling and McPherson raised the hopes of the Third’s supporters. Stirling shot, but Haddow easily returned the ball. The brothers McPherson were next in evidence for the Rangers, John sent the ball through, but an appeal for offside by the Third was sustained by the referee, and the point went for nothing. The Rangers kept up the pressure however and the manner in which Anderson kept out their shots was marvellous. A free kick brought relief, and Haddow’s end was visited. Johnstone spoiled a chance by shooting recklessly. Play again centred in midfield for a time till McPherson and Barker got away. A weak pass by the latter was interrupted by Rae, and the ball given to Stevenson. This layer got over the ground at a great rate, but he ruined his chance by a wild shot. A corner for the Third followed, but A McCreadie got the ball away. Davie single-handed carried play to the other end. He shot, but Anderson conceded a corner. A second corner followed, but neither hand any effect on the result. Two minutes later Kerr put on the third goal for the Rangers. The Third strove had to make up the leeway. They kept the Rangers defence on the move, and from a miss kick by Haddow, Oswald got a chance, which he took advantage of by scoring the first goal for the Third. After a time they returned to the attack, and Stevenson scored their second goal, Haddow letting the ball slip through his fingers. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 2 goals.
