Match Trivia

This League match should have been played at Ibrox, but on account of the ground a friendly only was played. Full 4000 spectators were present. Losing the toss, the Rangers kicked off. A return by Barbour gave Fyfe a chance and he sent in a good shot, which Haddow just managed to get away. A minute later D Bell had a try, which missed by inches. Then the Rangers came away with a dash, and McPherson and Boyd each had a try, but both were fruitless. From the goal kick the Third’s left wing got off, and gave the Rangers halves some trouble. A free kick brought relief to the Rangers, which ended in Smith giving away a corner. Cowan placed the ball beautifully, and Boyd headed the ball into the net. First goal for Rangers. The Rangers continued to press, and a free kick against Blair gave them another chance but Ross was on the alert, and he cleared his charge. Halftime result Rangers 1 goal: Third Lanark 0 goals. After the interval the Rangers had the wind in their favour. Right off the Third pressed, and Simpson sent in a beauty, which missed just by inches. Keeping at it, D Bell next had a try from the corner flag, but the ball went across the goalmouth. From the goal kick A Smith got away clear and he sent in a fine shot, which struck the fat-off post and rebounded into play. Boyd caught it on his breast and got it into the net ere Ross had a chance to save. Two goals for Rangers. The Third put on a spurt after this, and made a raid on the Rangers citadel. They got a free kick on the 12-yard line, which Simpson took, but Garside spoiled it by heading the ball over the crossbar. From the goal kick the Rangers got down on Ross and gave the Third’s custodian a chance to distinguish himself, which he did to some purpose. Time after time he cleared his charge when it looked as if it must fall. Some clever play by the Rangers forwards enabled Boyd to put on a third goal. From this till the close the Rangers had the game in hand. Final result – Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 0 goals.
