Match Trivia
This fixture was decided at Ibrox Park in presence of about 10,000 spectators. The local team lost the toss, and play started with great dash on both sides. The first feature of note was a capital attempt by Fraser to score, but the attack was frustrated, and the Cathkin men had a visit to the other end, where Hodge checkmated a dangerous attempt by Crossan to get a corner. By splendid passing the Rangers got well down, and McPherson shot right into Downie’s hands. The Third Lanark was displaying equally good play in the open, but their shooting was weak. After 25 minutes play the Rangers new right wing distinguished himself by scoring a goal on the run. The ball was sent low into Downie, who threw himself on the ground in the endeavour to save. The Volunteers however, attacked vigorously, but though four corner kicks in succession fell to them they could not score, and at halftime the record was one to nothing in favour of the home team. The second half opened with the Rangers beating down on their opponent’s goal. Kerr early raised the excitement by striking the crossbar with a good hard shots. The Third Lanark then came away surprisingly. The Rangers were momentarily pressed, and a regrettable incident occurred two of the players testing their tempers and ‘squaring up’. This resulted in the intervention of Mr Bishop who granted a penalty kick against the Rangers. Considerable curiosity was aroused as the players hung back to witness McFarlane attempt to get the ball past Haddow. He shot hard and low, but the ball struck the post, and went past. The 3rd Lanark backs, Smith and Nisbet were seen at their best, and the first named showing the best back lay on the field. The Rangers superiority was in the forward division; McCreadie, McPherson and Kerr have not been to better advantage this season. One grand run by Hugh McCreadie deserve special mention; and following close on a second goal got by Marshall for the Rangers the outlook for the latter was rosy, indeed. The closing stages of the game were characterised by splendid attack and defence at the 3rd Lanark end. The result was – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark nil
