Match Trivia

Glorious weather favoured the second tie between the Rangers and the Third Lanark on Hampden Park, and there was in consequence a splendid turnout, as many as 15,000 being within the enclosure when the game started. The Third were first to beak away, and were early at Haddow’s charge, where spasmodic efforts were made to score, but over anxiety spoiled every effort. It was evident that the desire to rush the pace was upsetting the calculation of both teams, as nothing like concerted action had so far been visible. The Rangers were oftener at goal than the Third, and after some clever play in midfield, McPherson sent in a rattling shot, which Orr held. A minute later Cowan, from the corner flag, sent in a beauty, which was very near being converted into a goal. The Lively rushes of the Rangers rather put their opponents on their mettle, and some hot passages ensured. The formers goal was visited, and Haddow had to save some stiff shots. From end to end the ball travelled, and as the game went on there was an infusion of rough play which was quite out of keeping with the issue at stake. Towards the close the Rangers had the better of the exchanges, but could not open the score. Halftime result – No goals scored. A slight wind blew from the west as the second half began, and the Rangers had the advantage, if any, of having it behind them. They started well enough, but Barbour brought them up, and play was carried down towards Haddow, who was forced to concede a corner. A well-meant effort of H McCreadie was only a few inches wide of the mark, and for a time matters were made lively for the Third’s defence. The game livened up a bit, and there were occasional flashes of brilliant play, but grand chances were thrown away. After a lot of hard pressure brought to bear on them, the Third made an effort, and a visit was paid to Haddow, Dunlop just missed by inches. Give-and-take play followed, and fouls were frequent on both sides, but of a minor nature. From one of these, about twenty yards out the Rangers opened the scoring amid much enthusiasm. This change in their fortunes gave them heart, and a minute later they had the ball again in the net, but the whistle had sounded for a foul a moment before. Keeping up their dashing style, the Rangers almost added another point this time from the foot of Cowan, who was going strongly. This effort brought a corner, which being well placed by Cowan, was soon converted into a goal. This seemed to settle the Third, who for a time wavered, and they were nearly beaten again. A big effort was now made by the Third’s forwards to turn the tide, and they were almost successful, N Smith saving only keeping them back. Cowan again asserted himself, a single-handed run of his bringing the third point. He ran down to the corner flag, passed across to A Smith, who in turn placed it in front of goal, and Barker popped the ball through. The Light Blues were going to leave nothing to chance, and kept pegging away in their endeavour to increase their score. A foul was taken by Mitchell, who slipped the ball back to Drummond, who sent it spinning into the net. Result – Rangers 4 goals: Third Lanark 0 goals.
