Match Trivia

Third Lanark may have thought it a bad omen when the Rangers’ crowd cheered the broadcast announcement that Alec Venters was in the team. It was! Venters had a whole lot to do with pulling Rangers out of a nasty scrape. They were right up against it in the first half, as you may guess from the fact that Dewar scored a very natty goal from a Watters pass, after 13 minutes, and the score was not levelled until three minutes from the interval. It was Venters, who did the equalising, and a trim left-foot shot it was. In about a minute more Thornton headed a second goal, and Rangers went inside with time to let the strain go off. I am giving Third Lanark full credit for a sound first-half display which worried Rangers’ defence a whole lot – all but Dawson, who was in the position of seeing the Cathkin forwards shy of shooting. There was too much pushing the ball to a colleague less favourable placed than the man who made the pass. It was a different second half – pretty much a one-way affair. Venters shot a third goal 17 minutes after the restart; Thornton headed a fourth from Kinnear’s centre; unlucky Black headed a fifth when attempting to clear. It was too easy for Rangers at the finish. When on top, half-backs and forwards were a combination. It was free, open football, a big advance on the too close work of the first half. Against it, Third Lanark’s defence could not be blames for capitulating. Carabine and Johnston had a worrying time. Bradshaw was slow, but he stood his ground and got the high balls with his head, which was good for his team. As a forcing half-back, Blair vied with Brown and McKillop. Woodburn had quite a good game, and when a pass was the thing, he gave it. After their first half showing, which pleased, the Cathkin forwards went back a lot. There was a kind of cleverness in the line, but it lacked the mighty punch. The Referee – Heard from the fans but came pretty well out of it. Anyone can make an odd mistake.
