Match Trivia

The attendance at Ibrox for the first League meeting of the season between these prominent city rivals would ultimately be in the neighbourhood of 20,000, and with ideal weather conditions an interesting game was submitted. Rangers won the toss, but sofas as the elements were concerned this meant no advantage. They set the visitors to play towards the west goal, and Whittle kicked off. Progress was made between the centre and Smith until Gordon secured and parted to Bowie. The latter swung the ball well across to Alex Smith, who smartly slipped round Armstrong, and got in a try at Brownlie in the first minute of play. Brownlie, however, stopped the shot, and throughout the game demonstrated frequently his ability as a keeper. Third forwards got going, and got within range of Farrington, Smith sending past. Third’s attack never got properly settled a fact due to the earnest tactics of the home halves, who gave them no rest. Reid had a smart shot at Brownlie. Rangers held on tenaciously till Bowie got in a swift ground shot, which got the corner of the net low down, after the game had been ten minutes in progress. A beat up by Whittle got the visitors among the home defence, where Ormonde seemed to be just in time to prevent Farrington being tested, when he kicked the ball practically from Whittle’s toe. At the other end a cross From Bowie was accurately squared by Alex Smith across in front of Brownlie. Reid was on the spot a couple of yards off the goal, but Brownlie anticipated his effort, and cleverly turned the ball out. Rankine was able to made headway, but his passes were usually pounced on by an opponent, and Third’s forwards hesitated when they had a chance, with the result that the home defenders got time to clear. The score at the interval was – Rangers 1; Third Lanark 0. Reid and Bennett had a run on resuming to find Third’s defence too much for them. Rankine got off for the other end, and this led to the equaliser, Brown beating the Rangers’ keeper somewhat simply with a long shot, which Farrington just touched. This unexpected success put new life into the game, and Rangers made desperate efforts to regain the lead. Corner after corner fell to them, but Brownlie kept his end up manfully until about ten minutes from the finish, when a miskick by Armstrong was promptly taken advantage of by the watchful Reid, and Brownlie was left helpless. Rangers were the superior team, and fully merited their victory.
