Match Trivia

This tie came off on the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park, in fine weather, and in presence of 8000 spectators, and after a close and exciting hour and an half of active play ended in favour of the Rangers by two goals to none. The Volunteers had the best of it at first, and got the ball behind, but the Rangers made a very nice run, and got pretty well up on the 3rd L.R.V. lines, and the ball went behind from a shy by Allan. After the kick-out the Volunteers backs defended their lines well, and a brilliant kick by McCracken saved the goal from danger. Some even play followed, and it took both teams all their time to see the ball, as the sun was so strong and bright. By and by the Rangers again warmed up their opponents and a shot by Wyllie from the right went over the bar. The kick-out was followed by a smart bit of tackling between Allan and Morrison, and the latter got the ball away and made a fast run down the left. He was challenged by Hay, but eventually got the ball away, and made a straight shot that took the Rangers goalkeeper by surprise. He collared the ball in his arms, however and punted it out very cleverly, and no time was lost in bringing the forwards to close quarters. Here a succession of scrimmages occurred, and from one of these McCracken dashed in and cleared the ball away from the 3rd L.R.V. goal. Some nice play was then shown by Thomson and Burke for the 3rd Lanark, and Wyllie and Mitchell for the home team, but no advantage was gained. As the round was wearing to a close the chances of scoring became more remote, as the teams seemed so well matched that neither could get neat enough to goal. As it was the Rangers had a corner-flag kick, and the scrimmage which afterwards occurred was an exciting one, but the Volunteers cleared well and when the whistle sounded no scoring was the order of the day. The Rangers started the second half by dibbling the ball off, but there were far too many of the forwards crowding together, and they could not get the leather clear. The 3rd L.R.V. men took in the situation at a glance, and soon had the ball dangerously near the Rangers goal, at which Johnstone had a close shy. After the kick out the game was little straggling, and ‘fouls’ were frequent, but not the slightest advantage was gained on either side. The monotony was eventually relieved by a fine run on the part of Wyllie, who cleared himself of the Volunteers backs and made a splendid shot that all but took effect. The Rangers however were not really playing so well at goal as they ought to have done and lost many fine chances. In turn the Volunteers made another good run in combination, and a fine shot from the foot of Hamilton was only saved by the Rangers goalkeeper throwing away the ball. Back it came again, however and this time Burke was very nearly scoring. The Rangers after this warmed up a bit, and got two corner-flag kicks, but nothing came of them owning to good back play. The Volunteers however retaliated and a nice run up field started by Burke and centred by Thomson and Hamilton, was productive of some advantage to the strangers, who were now close on the Rangers goal. In a scrimmage one of the Rangers backs fouled the ball, and from the free-kick about 25 yards away, the Third Lanark man (McCracken) put the ball between the posts. No one touched it, however and of course the effort when for nothing. After the kick-out the Rangers forwards from a determined scrimmage in front, the ball was goaled by Allan amid great cheering. After the next kick-off, and with ten minutes left to play the 3rd L.R.V. men pressed the Bridgeton goal, and had a couple of corner-flag kicks, but both were saved splendidly, and again the home team made another brilliant charge up on the Volunteers lines, and after a determined battle in front miller got the ball away and sent it clean through. This made the Rangers two goals ahead, and although the remaining few minutes were nobly fought by the contending teams the aspect of the game remained the same and the Rangers retired from the field the victors by two goals to none.
