Match Trivia

The replay on Hampden Park attracted a large attendance of spectators, despite the varying nature of the climatic conditions. The arrangements put in a force a week ago were duplicated on Saturday. The Third Lanark played the same team, but the Rangers made one change, Low late Abercorn, Dundee and Woolwich Arsenal, taking the place of Hamilton. Prompt to time McColl kicked off, and lot away Smith, who got cornered near the flag. Barr returned and Sloan assisted the ball farther a field, Johnstone next shooting over the Rangers lines. Low and Speedie replied with a concerted run, but they were stopped by Neilson, who placed the ball into Sinclair’s hands. Meanwhile the Third’s halfbacks lost no opportunity to give their forwards every chance. For a time the middle lines of both teams tackled, and fed judiciously. Wilson, Munro and Johnstone for the Third and Smith and Kyle for the Rangers were seen to much advantage with rare open fieldwork, backed up with sound display by the custodians and backs. Equality in play ruled for a time, but latterly the Third became aggressive. McColl exerted himself to the full, and a great shot by him was finely saved by Raeside. Continuing to force the pace, Wilson at length found an opening, and scored with a swift and low shot. At the interval the score was – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 0. The second half was full of grit with a tendency to overdo the outfield work. The Third were first to settle down to play identified with coolness and careful passing, and Johnstone from a difficult position screwed the ball into the net. Thereafter the Third in a winning mood, quite mastered their opponents at all points, and the third goal was scored by Wilson, who was the best forward on the field. It was after this loss that the Rangers were seen at their best, and for fully ten minutes they gave the Third a lot of trouble and scored off a corner kick. However the Third Lanark again got into their stride, and from this point till the close were masters of the situation, and deservedly won the blue riband of Scottish football by 3 goals to 1. All over they were the superior team. The gate receipts amounted to £923, and the stands income totalled £240 – total £1163
