Match Trivia

This event came off on the ground of the Rangers, Ibrox Park in presence of a fair attendance of spectators, and as the home team played in splendid form they defeated the Volunteers by five goals to none. The ground was in rare order, and the match proved a very enjoyable one throughout. The Rangers lost the toss, and kicked off against the wind; but there was comparatively little to favour the toss winners. The ball was soon returned by a smart rush on the part of the strangers, who soon had a corner flag kick. The Rangers backs, however were on the alert, and after some hard work cleared their goal. In turn they fed the forwards well, and Brand and Fraser getting clear run, the former made the first score of the match by a fast shot. After the ball was again set in motion the 3rd L.R.V. men, headed by Sneddon and Johnstone had a neat passing run up to the Rangers goal, but they were badly backed up by the rest of the forwards, and missed a good chance to score. Before halftime was sounded the Rangers scored again out of a hard scrimmage, and the team accordingly changed ends with the home team two goals ahead. In the second round the Rangers had the wind in their favour, but the play proved pretty even, for ten minutes, during which the backs and halfbacks on both sides were busy. The Ibrox team, however again showed decided superiority, and Brand and Peacock scored a third goal between them. The ball was then brought up to the centre of the Volunteers and kicked off; but the Rangers were ever on the alert, and soon scored a fourth goal from a side shot by Fraser. After this the 3rd L.R.V. wakened up somewhat, and had a couple of smart runs, but defective passing near goal told its own tale, and two good chances were lost. The Rangers on the other hand, were remarkably steady when approaching the opposing goal, and before the game ended they added another goal, this winning by the long odds of five goals to none
