Match Trivia
The game at Ibrox Park, where Third Lanark were visitors, was lost and won in the first five minutes. In that time Thirds lost two goals. The first was through McCormack passing the ball back to Brownlie, who could not reach it, and it passed into the net over his head. A couple of minute later Cunningham, left unmarked caught up a beautiful pass for Paterson and beat Brownlie whit a shot which he might have got it, but didnt. The third goal for Rangers was a fine effort on the part of Cairns, who accepting a pass from Paterson, had the Thirds backs in a tangle, and then made no mistake with his parting shot. Thirds were no match for the Ibrox players, but in one of their spasmodic runs, at their opponents ground Flannaghan beat Lock with one of the few shot s which the keeper was asked to save. There was yet another thrill for Rangers supporters when ten minutes before the interval, Cunningham sent in a hard drive to Brownlie which the keeper got his hands at but could not stop. Although the Cathkin team had been a little unfortunate, especially with the loss of the first goal, Rangers were full value for their three goals lead at the interval. The nipper play of the Light Blues had taken the sting out of their opponents, and although Thirds battled on in an uphill contest Rangers only got their due when Cunningham midway through the second half added a fifth goal, and gained the coveted hat trick for himself. To add to their misfortunes Thirds about the same time lost their clever forward Flannaghan, who retired through injuries, and took no further part in the game. It was seldom Lock was tested. His backs were unusually able to circumvent the efforts if the Cathkin forwards. Of three class half-backs Bowie was best, and Cunningham distinguished himself in the goal-scoring line, while his play otherwise was splendid. In the opening half Muirhead played finely, and all through Paterson, who added the six goal a few minutes before the close was a start performer. Brownlie scarcely played up to International form.
