Match Trivia

These teams met at Ibrox Park, last night and played in presence of nearly 3000 spectators. Though time to start at 6.30, it was nearly seven o’clock before the teams took to the field. Winning the toss the 3rd played with a strong sun to their rear. Play went pretty equal for the first fifteen minutes, during which time the ‘Blues’ had hard lines twice, the strong sun upsetting their best efforts to score. The ball was kept in midfield for some time when at length a rush was made for the Rangers goal, and by what might be termed a fluke; Oswald scored the first point for the Volunteers. The goal was disputed, but allowed. The ball again in motion, the Rangers by a little good play kept their opponents pressed for some time, and after hovering round the posts got a corner, which however proved useless. Shortly after the 3rd had a corner, and made as little from it. Again the sphere got to the 3rd’s ground, and by a gentle kick from Wyllie the score was equalised. With the change of ends a game hitherto wanting in interest became fast and exciting. Within a few minutes the Rangers got a corner, and almost scored, McKenzie saving very smartly. After a couple of runs from posts to posts amid great excitement play confined to midfield again. Johnstone getting a clear field, had a splendid run with the ball and put it softly through to the amazement of Ritchie, who was off guard. Within the next two minutes another, making the third goal for the Volunteers, was notched this time by McGlashan, a second eleven man. There was no further scoring, although the Rangers put on an extra effort; in fact the fates opposed them the whole game for certainly during the latter half they had the best of the plat. The Volunteers were represented by nearly as many of their second eleven as first, and the Rangers played with nearly the same team as against the Rovers the other evening. Result – 3rd L.R.V. three goals, Rangers one
