Match Trivia

The Rangers and 3rd L.R.V. played off a friendly game at Ibrox Park, in presence of a good crowd. The weather was stormy, and rain fell heavily. The Third, despite rumours to the contrary, were well represented, and Love who was reported to be in England was present. The Volunteers had also the assistance of John McPherson (Cowlairs) and Scott (Airdrieonians); Johnston was tried in the centre. The Rangers won the toss and Johnstone kicked off for the Third. Allan at once brought down the ball, and Rae returned without any difficultly. It was pretty evident from the kick-off that, owing to the rain and sloppy state of the ground, play would be of an indifferent kind. The Rangers kept close to the Third goal, and McCreadie, by a long shot, almost scored for the Rangers. Some relief was afforded by a clever run up the field by Thomson and Marshall, but Hay stopped them. Allan soon transferred the ball to the Third’s ground and passed it to Henderson, who however in trying to score sent it by the post. Downie saved a good shot, but against Lochhead a foul was given, and the Third’s goal was again in danger. The Cathkin backs however were equal to the occasion, and got the ball away. Scott, after a pass by Johnstone sent the ball between the Rangers posts, but a claim of offside was sustained, and the point disallowed. All this time, however the Third were playing well against the wind, and were making a good resistance to the repeated advances of their opponents. Indeed so far the game promised to be a good one, the Rangers pressing well and the Third defence admirably. A splendid shot from the foot of John Allan was cleverly fisted out by Downie, but McCreadie managed by a judicious shot to evade the Cathkin goalkeeper after about twenty minutes play, and scored the first goal for the Rangers amid great cheering. For a time after this success the play was exceedingly active, the Volunteers trying hard to equalise and the Rangers striving as hard to increase their score. Nicol was pretty severly pressed, but he saved a good shot from one of the Third’s forwards. From fine passing and dodging by Wyllie, who ultimately crossed over the ball to Henderson, the Rangers scored their second goal, Henderson, from a centre by Wyllie, heading the ball through, Downie being quite unable to save. Even with the wind against them two goals at this time did not by any means make the Rangers safe, and it was felt that another point was required before halftime to make the home team feel comfortable against the efforts of their opponents when the latter would have the assistance of the wind in second portion of the game. Wyllie for the Rangers was laying a splendid game, and so was John Allan, who scored a third goal, but Donald Gow was offside. No more goals were taken, and halftime found the standing – Rangers 2 goals; Third 0. Match ProgrammeIn the second half the Volunteers had the wind in their favour. A few minutes after restarting Johnstone sent in a grand shot. The ball rebounded off the crossbar, and Marshall sent it through, thus scoring the first goal for the Volunteers. The rain continued to fall heavily, but both sides continued to play vigorously, and the Rangers succeeded in getting the ball to the other end, where they did some pressing, McCreadie ultimately shooting the ball over the crossbar. From the kick-off the Third brought the ball well up, and the Rangers had to concede a corner kick, which was taken by McPherson, but he sent the ball behind the pots. After fifteen minutes play the Third scored the equalising point, Hay unfortunately missed his kick, when Scott rushed in and sent the ball through. A very good run inaugurated by Thomson brought the ball close up to the Rangers goal, when Scott standing ready on the other wing, rushed in at the opportune moment, and easily scored the third and leading goal. Immediately afterwards a corner fell to the Rangers, Wyllie taking the kick. He landed the ball fair on the crossbar, and Downie had to throw out to save the Rangers from scoring. Allan took the second corner kick, but Dowling, getting possession of the ball, sent it to midfield. Although the wind was against the Rangers they were decidedly playing the best at this stage, the ball being continuously in the Third ground. After a lot of passing and re-passing, the Third got right down, when Johnstone with one of these low quick shots for which he is now famous scored the fourth goal for the Volunteers. The Rangers were probably having the most of the play, but the Third were far more effective in front of goal. Towards the close the ball was brought pretty close to the Third’s goal, When Wyllie passed to Gow, who a few yards from goal scored the third goal for the Rangers, Downie being unable to save. A Few minutes before the whistle blew the Rangers secured a corner, Wyllie took the kick and centred well, but McPherson breasted out the ball, and they kicked it down the field, when time was called. The result was 3rd Lanark 4 goals; Rangers 3 goals.
