Match Trivia

Had the rate of scoring been maintained that ruled in the early stages of the match between Rangers and Third Lanark at Ibrox, the result would have resembled that of a cricket match. However, all the scoring was reserved for the first half; in the second forty-five the goalkeepers were able to deal with all the shots that came their way, though they got more than one fright. The changing of the fixture from a League match to a ‘friendly’ naturally affected the attendance adversely, but in the circumstances the gate was quite satisfactory. In the first ten minutes the match looked like a walk-over for Rangers, as beside doing all the pressing they score a couple of goals. However, in other five minutes the teams were on level terms, Chalmers from a pass by Prentice scoring quite simply, while Carmichael equalised from a centre by Rankine after the latter had cleverly outwitted the home defence. The Forward play on both sides was superior to the defence. But the Rangers’ quintette combined better, and were more effective at goal. Before the interval the ‘Light Blues’ had recovered their two-goal lead, which they maintained till call of time. The second half was noteworthy for an improvement in the defensive work of both teams, as is shown by the fact that there was no further scoring. Rangers all over were smarter on the ball, and fully deserved their victory. The performance is all the more meritorious seeing that only one of the First Division forwards was playing. Third Lanark had out a strong team, the only notable absentee from the League eleven being Brownlie. With the Rangers, of course, it was different, as it was the selection of Bennett, Reid and Smith to play for Scotland that led to the alteration of the fixture to a friendly match, Law, Chapman and Hogg were also rested, and Bowie was the regular First League forward in the attack. The substituted, however, were all splendid. Goodwin and Brown, who are not strangers in the first eleven, made a fine left wing the latter’s speed being a feature of the attack. Parker did well at centre, and had two goals Gordon was played at outside right, and was dashing and sprightly as usual. Third’s forwards were not very far behind the Rangers’ five. Little Hosie was very tricky, and was shifted to centre-forward in the second half. Rankine was also in form, and his clever work led to Third’s second goal. Carmichael was the best shot and gave Lock several nasty ones to save.
