Match Trivia
Continuing their tour, the English League champions turned up at Ibrox Park, Govan last night, and played the Rangers. Beautiful weather favoured the event, and consequently there was a large turnout of spectators, fully 5000 people being present. Losing the toss, the Sunderland kicked off against the wind, and with the sun in their faces. For a time play was rather slow, the ball being kept pretty much in midfield. From a long return by Gow Sunderland conceded a corner. Nothing came of it however. After ten minutes play the Rangers came away with a rush, and Kerr scored their first goal with a lovely shot. Keeping up the pressure, Kerr nearly repeated the score, but the ball went over the bar. Sunderland next took up the running, but the defence of Gow and Drummond was almost perfect, and they could not score. A lucky equaliser came at last. Being closed pressed, Drummond sent out a ball with great force, but Campbell was in the way, the ball struck him and bounded into the net. Five minutes later Miller scored a second goal for Sunderland after a nice run up on the left. The Rangers played all they knew and looked like equalising, but Porteous fisted out the ball. No penalty kick was given however. After 40 minutes play the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Sunderland 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. The second half open vigorously. After Sunderland had visited Haddow, the Rangers had an innings, and with the least bit of luck would have equalised. Twice in succession Barker struck the post. Another time he crossed beautifully, but Davie ruined his header and the ball went into touch. Getting away on the right, Sunderland made things lively for the Rangers, Harvie centred, but the ball was put into touch. Gibson took the shy and sent the ball right into goal. Haddow unfortunately touched the ball and it went through, thus making the third goal for the Sunderland. Two minutes later Campbell put on a fourth goal for Sunderland. The Rangers retaliated, and obtained a corner, from which McCreadie scored a second goal. The Sunderland were having all the luck, and another of Gibson’s shies struck a player and went through, thus registering their fifth goal. Darkness was now setting in, and another shy by Gibson resulted in Sunderland scoring a sixth goal, Harvie getting the ball at his foot and sending it through. This finished the scoring. Result – Sunderland 6 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
