It was pretty easy for Rangers, St Mirrens defence was solid and tenacious, but the half-backs had little or no steadying influence, and the forwards could not settle down to any sort of cohesive game. Of course, they were up against a problem, for Meiklejohn and Brown were supremely tactical, and could anticipate exactly what Workman and Rankine would do. McCrae kept going all the time, but without support he could do no more than bring out the heading powers of Simpson. Hamilton had a pleasant afternoon. The shots of any consequence he had to deal with could be numbered on the fingers of one hand. McDonald had the mastery of Knox all the time. I have not seen McDonald more sure in his kicking. His overhead clearing and the taking of the ball in the air or on the drop was almost perfect, Gray put some balls out, but he was a sound back, and his recovery was quick and precise. At half-back, the Rangers had an immense advantage. Meiklejohn scarcely turned a hair, but by tactical brainy positional play made his presence felt in defence and attack. Brown got about in more frisky style, but he was a big force in the game, and by his thrust-full advances gave urge to the forwards. Sometimes the inside forwards kept the ball too close, but they played some real good football. They were a combination could find the man, and had a finish the St Mirren front line did not possess. The game had gone only five minutes when the Ibrox left wing and centre went tearing through and from fairly well out McPhail sent a low shot into the net. With the game running very much in Rangers favour, Fotheringham and his backs got plenty of practice, and they did well to keep the first half score down to two. Marshall got the second goal ten minutes after the first with a shot that gave Fotheringham no chance. There were a lot of near things after that at Fotheringhams end, and by way of variety, McCrae whipped one at Hamilton, which the goalkeeper held safely. In the second half, St Mirren did much better, but the forwards could not find a real punch. Still, the team put Rangers moves on the stretch, and things were becoming interesting when the Ibrox team helped themselves to a couple of more goals. English got the first of these with a very clever shot made on the turn, and the ball went in at an angle, with Fotheringham only able to touch it as it went through. This was 17 minutes after the interval, and three minutes later English bored his way close up to the by-line and then passed back sharply for Marshall to crash the ball into the net. Rangers finished easy winners. They were the better all-round team
