Match Trivia
Overshadowed in every phase of football, the Saints of Perth suffered a complete eclipse at Ibrox Park. Back to their most brilliant form of last season, the winners made every post a winning post, and had the game won in half an hour. Memorable feature of their captivating display was the team work of the entire side. The free combination that existed between the half-back and forwards nonplussed a side whose exhibition was not comparable with good Second Division class. Brown, Venters, Smith and McPhail touched the heights all through, and Simpson and Meiklejohn were unbeatable. The Saints made a disastrous start. After four minutes, loose play by their backs and goalkeeper lost them a goal. Wylie was primarily at fault, for he had the ball in his hands and lost it. McPhail promptly scored. Down the wind, the Light Blues, revealing excellent positioning and accurate inter-passing, had their opponents on the rack. Two glorious goals from Venters and Smith, within four minutes of each other, as the half-hour approached, was just reward for superior play. Venters shot from 30 yards. The inside-right had another goal nine minutes from time, after good spade work by Gillick. Nothing came off between times for the Perth forwards, whose combination had improved slightly. Mason made the best shot of all, but the Rangers defence was iron-proof. Close on the interval, Smith rattled on a fifth goals. McPhail had a couple of minutes spell at full back, until McDonald appeared after the cross-over. Now more in the game, the Perth men had nothing but four corners to show for outfield pressure. They could not use the wind as the Rangers had done. Nor were they so alert. There was np sting in their shooting. The Rangers could always hold their own. Smith completed his hat-trick in half an hour. Gillick responded with a seventh goal eight minutes from time to complete the rout
