Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox Park, before 10,000 spectators. Rangers lost the toss and kicked off against a strong breeze. They were soon making tracks for Russell when McLean stopped their progress. The Saint’s left wing were prominent, and Fisher had a try, which went past. At the other end Hyslop gave Russell a warmer to clear, which the goalkeeper did in good style. Gibson next had a try, which Wark blocked. Provan got possession and with some clever tactics he transferred play to the opposite end, where he had a bout with Glen, which ended in favour of the ex-Rentonian. A splendid run by Low was deservedly sheered. He got past several opponents and passed over to the left, but Hyslop spoiled it. Although playing against the wind the Rangers were having as much of the game as their opponents. The Rangers all round were playing a superior game, and only luck kept them from scoring. Miller had a shot, which went over the bar. From the goal kick the Saints right wing got off, Paton leading them on. The Saints were playing for all they were worth, and a combined run by their forwards enabled McMillan to score the first goal from a scrimmage. The Rangers were eager to improve their position, and Low had a couple of shots. Russell cleared the first all right, but ere he could getaway the second A Smith had it in the net, thus equalising the game. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: St Bernards 1goal. On resuming the Rangers were the first to take the game in hand, and Hyslop had a shot, which went yards over the bar. McNeill on the right beat Glen and shot, Dickie caught it, but ere he could clear Fisher scored a second goal for the Edinburgh team. The Rangers strove hard to again get level. They plied Russell with shot after shot, but none of them too effect. A free kick out on the touchline was beautifully placed by Mitchell, and the ball slipped through off one of the Saints. With the score again even, both teams went at it with a will. The Rangers were now beginning to get the upper hand, and they should have increased their score. Low and A Smith each had tries, which struck the goal posts. Low and McPherson were playing a hard game on the Rangers right, but Kinross and Robertson didn’t give them too much rope. A long overhead shot by Gibson was caught by Russell, but ere he could clear he was bustled into the net. Result – Rangers 3 goals: St Bernards 2 goals.
