Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park before 4000 spectators. Having lost the toss the Rangers faced the wind and set the ball in motion. McPherson and A Smith were early prominent, and gave Oswald a chance, but the ball went over the line. Then the Saints came away, and a bout between Wilson and Gibson ended in the ball being sent into touch. Notwithstanding they had the wind against them, the Rangers put on the pressure so some purpose. Barker, Oswald and McPherson each had a try at Hunter, but the Saint was equal to the occasion. Hall opened up the play a bit, and passed to the right, where Wilson sent in a beauty, but the ball was a foot over the bar. Play was fast, each goal being assailed in turn, but the Rangers had slightly the best of it. Halftime result – Rangers 0: St Bernards 0. After the interval the Saints had to defend with the breeze against them. A look in by the Saints was repulsed by N Smith, who sent the ball far as midfield. Here Barker got in possession, and after some clever work he passed to Oswald, who shot and A Smith running in, breasted the ball into the net, thus scoring the first goal of the match for the Rangers. The home team kept up the pressure, but the Saints defended in grand style. After McLeod had received a visit from the Saints forwards, the Rangers again took the game in hand. Oswald passed back to McPherson, who with a long shot scored the Rangers second goal. The Saints stove hard to improve their position, but the Rangers defence was not to be beat. Result – Rangers 2 goals: St Bernards 0 goals.
