Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, before 8000 spectators, the Rangers kicked off with the sun in their faces, and Gardner at once repulsed an attack by the home forwards. After a few minutes play, Wyllie passed the ball from the right across the goalmouth, and McPherson almost dribbled it through, Gow however when a goal seemed almost certain, got the ball away amidst much excitement. The Rangers were first to score from a scrimmage after twenty minutes play. At length, after thirty minutes lay, the Renton forwards, headed by James McCall had a combined run right up to the Rangers goal, which had a very narrow escape. The Rangers halfbacks were playing a strong game, Mitchell in particular lacing the ball with great judgment, but for all that the Renton forwards troubled them severely, and Duncan was unfortunate in not scoring. Spurting away, Wyllie sent the ball across to the left, and McPherson coming up tipped it through the goal, making the second goal for the Rangers. At halftime the score was – Rangers 2 goals: Renton nil. A minute after the start Hislop scored the third goal for the Rangers, and it now looked all over with the Renton. John McPherson had a grand screw kick from the corner immediately afterwards, but the ball fell over the bar into Gow’s hands. Donald Gow then sent in a long shot right into his namesake’s hands, who just got rid of the ball in time, but immediately afterwards Kerr, with a clinging shot, scored the fourth goal for the Rangers. Renton opened out their play a bit, and showed considerable dash, bit it was too late. After 25 minutes play the Renton put on a spurt, and the forwards getting well upon their opponenets goal, the ball was headed through, the villages thus gaining their first point. The result of a rather disappointing match from the Renton point of view, was – Rangers 4 goals: Renton 1 goal
