Match Trivia
The return fixture between those teams was played at Ibrox Park, Govan before fully 5000 spectators. The weather was superb. The Renton were without Hannah and Brady, who were on the injured list, while the Rangers were without Marshall, who was playing in the International at Belfast. The Rangers lost the toss and Law kicked off. He passed to McPherson, who made straight for Renton’s goal, but being pressed for shooting room he passed back to A McCreadie. That player sent in a beauty, which took effect, the Rangers thus obtaining the first goal ere the game a minute old. Keeping at it, the Rangers front rank completely hemmed in their opponents, and Barker put on their second goal with a neat shot. Renton tried to raise the siege, but they could not get past midfield. Mathieson looked like getting in, but Dunbar spoiled his chance. Rangers got a corner, but made nothing of it. Barker was again prominent. He put in a run nearly the whole length of the field, and passed well, but Law’s final effort was too hasty, and the ball went behind. Rangers got a brace of corners. Lindsay sent the second one well out, but Scott returned with a fine shot. The goalkeeper caught the ball, but ere he had time to throw out Barker had man and ball through the goal, thus making the third point for the Rangers. Nettled at these reverses, the Renton strove hard to improve their position. They got within shooting distance, but all they obtained was a fruitless corner. Halftime result – Rangers 3 goals: Renton nil. The game was resumed with vigour. As in the opening period, the Rangers went off with the lead. Lindsay however was as the alert, and clever kept his fortress intact. Mathieson transferred play to the other end, where a free kick ten yards from goal looked rosy for Renton. J McCall took the kick. He sent the ball through, but as it touched no one on its course the point went for nothing. Play now became very fast, each goal being assailed in turn. From a pass by Barker, McPherson scored a fourth goal for Rangers. Drawing themselves together the Renton forwards made a raid on Haddow, and from a scrimmage in front of the goal Mathieson scored the first goal for the Villagers. A few minutes later a miss kick by Fairlie gave Barker chance, and that player raised the Rangers total to five. Just before the close the Renton came away with a rush, and Mathieson scored a second goal for them. Nothing further was done. The play of Barker for the Rangers was superb. He was ably backed by McPherson and the other forwards. James McCall was the best man for the Renton side. Final result – Rangers 5 goals: Renton 2 goals.
