Match Trivia

The first League match of the season at Ibrox Park, Govan drew out a crowd of fully 5000 spectators. The Renton kicked off against a strong wind, and sun, for several minutes each goal was assailed in turn, but the Rangers gradually assumed the offensive. From a return by Mitchell, Gray got a chance, which he improved upon by scoring the first goal for the Rangers, a minute later Kerr, with a lovely shot put on the second goal for the ground team. The Renton strove hard to make up their lost points, but the defence of the Rangers was expecting them. Upon a nice run on the right Steel centred the ball, and Barker put it through with his head. Three goals for Rangers. Steel was again prominent shortly after, when he put on the fourth goal for the ‘light blues’, with a shot, which completely suspired Wilson. The finest run of the day was now seen. All the Rangers forwards got away in a line, and Passing and re-passing they tore down on Wilson, whose goal was beaten for a fifth time by Gray. Halftime result – Rangers 5 goals: Renton 0 goals. With such a great handicap against them the Renton went at it with an effort on resuming. They early took the game in hand and hammed in the Rangers defence completely, and after Haddow had twice saved grandly, Fleming beat him this registering the first point for the Renton. A couple of minutes later the same layer put on the second goal for the village team. From a free kick the Renton obtained a third goal, the ball being headed past Haddow. This finished the scoring, although for a time it looked as if the game would be drawn. For the Renton the best men were Allison, McDonald, Fleming and McCall. The Rangers were good all round, especially Mitchell, Steel, McPherson and Barker. Final result – Rangers 5 goals: Renton 3 goals.
