Match Trivia
The Rovers rattled the Rangers in the opening minutes of the game at Ibrox yesterday. By delightful wing to wing play they beat the prospective and delayed champions to a standstill. James – the elusive, the tricker – meandered. He deceived Meiklejohn, wandered Reid, eluded Dixon, and beat Robb four minutes from the kick-off. Truly a great goal! Henderson was gifted a couple of great opportunities to equalise. Cumbersome and careless – he missed both. He dilly-dallied in front of goal with the first. Mathieson had time to smother his shot. He chose the more difficult task with the second. Cairns cutely drew the defence away before adroitly flicking the ball to him. Six yards from an untenanted goal he shot over. Cries of murder from the Ibrox faithful!!! Moyes and his pals saw to it that no more gifts were distributed. The game throughout bore a similarity to the last meeting of the two teams. Whereas the Rovers at Kirkcaldy bombarded Robb in the second half – the reverse happened yesterday. A goal down, Rangers played for a kingdom. Excepting a fugitive raid by Bell and Jennings, the Rovers were hemmed in on their goal. Mathieson, Moyes and Morris – with a little Rangers’ misfortune – were seen to advantage during the home team’s rally. Shot after shot, well directed and otherwise were safely countered. I thought Cunningham had the equaliser, a great first time drive, which narrowly missed. Again, when the big Eanger got the bar with a bumper. Hard lines, Rangers! Yet the credit must go to the visitors’ defence for their wonderful play. Mathieson, with more to do than Robb, emerged from the fray a hero. So too did Moyes, the best back on the field. Morris and Dixon both reached the height of perfection at half-back. The Raith forwards were only seen to advantage before half-time, when the whole line moved in unison. Truth to tell, the Rangers’ forwards were fickle. Good outfield play was wasted when near goal. Henderson must take the blame for this. All in, the Rovers were fortunate in delaying the championship flag for Ibrox
