Match Trivia

A meeting between these crack clubs never fails to draw a large attendance of spectators and the match at Kinning Park on Saturday afternoon formed no exception to the rule, for a capital game and fine weather caused fully 4,000 spectators to turnout. The heavy rail overnight made the ground very slippery, and falls were frequent; but on the whole the play on both sides but more particularly that of the Queen’s Park (who won by four goals to none) was of a superior order. The Queen’s Park kicked off and after some fine play on the part of the backs, the forwards soon came to close quarters and a brilliant run by and by on the part of the black and white striped men ended in Hamilton scoring a goal for them. After the next kick-off Gossland and Buchanan for the Rangers made a brilliant run on the left and the latter just missed the Queen’s Park goal by a hair breath. Even play followed for a short time, but the Queen’s Park men kept better on the ball than their opponents; and after getting it in good line a second goal was scored for them out of a scrimmage. Just before half time was announced the Rangers lines were closely besieged, but brilliant play on the part of Cameron and McHardy saved them repeatedly. In the second round the play was very fast and exciting on both sides and the Rangers had several fine runs up to the Queen’s Park goal, but indifferent shying at the last moment by Gossland and Heggie caused the club to lose several nice chances. As the match proceeded however the Rangers fell off considerably in their forward lay, but the backs and goalkeeper were in it, and the Queen’s Park men could not get the leather through the Rangers goal- Chalmers in fact, defending his charge in a way he had rarely, if ever done before. At length, however the persistent effort of the premier club’s forwards were irresistible and in trying to defend his goal near the left post the ball came off McHardy foot and went through – thus giving the Queen’s Park their third goal. After the next kick-off the Rangers forwards made a determined effort to score; but although very near goal twice, they missed their last chance by only getting a couple of corner-flag kicks. Before the game ended, however the Queen’s Park completely overmatched their powerful opponents and after pinning them up on their goal and getting quite a string of corner-flag kicks, scored a fourth point out of a scrimmage. Time was called not long after, leaving the Queen’s Park victors of a very pleasant game by four goals to none. For the Winners Walters was in grand form at back, and Campbell and Gow did a lot of hard work at halfback in the face of strenuous opponents while Allan, Hamilton and Christie were best forwards. The Rangers were never better served at gaol and extreme back, but the forwards wee again slack when in front of their opponent’s goal and wanted combination. The dribbling and general good play of Buchanan and Gossland however was excellent, but the backing up was not what it should have been against such a club as the Queen’s Park.
