Match Trivia

If this wasn’t a classic, don’t blame the players so much as the conditions. They were the very worst a player could contend with, and I think the whole bunch too credit in making the game interesting nearly all the way. The score represents the finishing qualities of the winners, but not the swing of the play, for the amateurs’ forwards had their full share of the ball, played well up to contact with the Rangers’ defence, and there found themselves out-manoeuvred; there always seemed to be a blue shirt on the spot when a black and white one sent up a danger signal. What of course, is tactical defence. Woodburn pretty well dominated in his own area and caused Kyle and Browning to swop positions near the end. Newcomers in both teams earned good marks, Duncanson especially for his two goals; he took his second as only an old hand would have been thought capable of doing. Venters’ goal, the only one of the first-half, after 4 minutes, would probably have been averted by Hamilton but for slipping when going for the ball. Level pegging at the interval would have been no more than the Amateurs deserved. It was different in the second half, for the Rangers forwards came along with bursts of quick, thrustful passing which found loopholes in the Amateurs defence. Duncanson got two goals in succession and Waddell a fourth, while all the promising forays of the Hampden forward could get nothing.
