Match Trivia

I don’t expect that Queen’s Park will object if I say that they helped to beat themselves at Ibrox Park yesterday. They should never have come off that field empty handed. They cannot find extenuation in the quality of the Rangers’ defence, some of which was moderate, to say the least, nor can they fall back upon the well-worn phrase, ‘hard luck.’ No their clever forwards were simply off shooting for the day, even to the extent of a child-like attempt by Aitken to convert a penalty. Rangers were by no means at their best, but they did easily the bulk of the pressure. The curious thing was that they got two of their goals as the outcome of light pressure, whereas their best engineered attacks were merely productive of exciting exchanges round about the Amateurs’ goal. Muirhead scored the only goal of the first half a minute from the interval. The opening was finely developed first by Bowie putting Cairns through, and then by the latter shaking the bar from which the ball rebounded to Muirhead. But an even better opening fell to RM Morton previously, and he shot weakly past – which shows the value of a player with a kick and an aim. Twenty minutes after the restart, Muirhead practically walked the ball into the net after trapping a centre from Archibald. Then came Aitken’s chance with the penalty, but he merely rolled the ball tamely away past the left post. The third Rangers; goal came near the end when ‘Lawson’ rounded Stevenson and scored with a low shot that took the ball away from Duncan all the time. Rangers’ defence were easily beaten at times, and they can thank the Amateur forwards for their kindnesses. Manderson, Dixon and Pursell were the effective men. The forwards played some nice football with Bowie a rare leader, and Muirhead showing himself a valuable emergency inside-left. Duncan in the Hampden team’s goal did all a man could do. Stevenson, the young right back, lacks experience. There was not much to steady him in the play of those around him. W Grant, from Renfrew, made quite a good partner for Alan Morton, but was inclined to return the pass too quickly. Manderson’s speed countered Morton. Aitken and Cresswell were such master on their side of the field that the scoring failure reflects upon them strongly. But RM Morton was also to blame
