Match Trivia
A breezy, sporting match, which might have more fairly ended in a draw, was won by Queen’s Park, chiefly because of courageous and clever defence. I don’t suppose Harkness has ever made a diner save than the one from Cunningham in the first half. He had another which was cheered loud and long, but on this occasion, I think the ball struck him on the head, which is just one of the little bits of luck a good goalkeeper gets. But every man in the Queen’s Park defence rose to the occasion. Sometimes the Rangers’ forwards were unlucky, but their task was made terribly difficult by the close tackling and good recovery of the Hampden half-backs, while Graham and Wiseman made no mistakes that was vital. Gillespie’s grip of Henderson was a big factor in the result. Rangers’ forwards played well in spasms, but they could not open up the Amateurs’ defence to much purpose until after the goal was lost, and then they made some storming attacks and really deserved to save a point. Cunningham and McKay changed places on resuming, and later, Henderson and Marshall swopped position, but even a penalty kick was not turned to account, for Cunningham drove the ball over the bar. The all-important goal came along 13 minutes after the change of ends. Rangers had been attacking when Crawford went after a long pass and centred well. Shaw and McBain awaited the dropping of the ball, and Hamilton came out to punch clear, but McBain got his head to it and the deed was done. This was only one of many dangerous raids by the Queen’s Park forwards among whom Crawford was always a menace with his fast excursions and accurate centres. Russell sent him many nice passes, and McBain was for ever thrusting through with any amount of dash. McAlpine and Nicholson were a clever wing, although the latter did not finish as well as he sometimes does. McKay and Henderson disappointed, and I question if the centre had one shot during the game. He was too easily beaten at close quarters. Marshall, at outside right, was not properly supported, but when he went into centre Rangers had their best chance of saving a point. Fleming has played better though, all the same, he nearly made a draw of it
