Match Trivia

One of those curious results that the Amateurs are so fond of contributing to our football entertainment. On chances, both sides might have run into double figures. As far as the general play went, if the scoring had stopped at Dodds’s very smart first goal justice would have been done. At half-time we were discussing what would happen if no goals were scored. We were as pessimistic about it as that, after what we had seen. To refresh the memory, let me say that the conditions are – ninety minutes’ play, corners to count if goals are equal, and if teams are still level, captains toss for the tie on the field. Well, it looked for long enough as if the referee would have to produce his penny again. Queen’s Park, but for lack of opportunism, might have led by a couple of goals before the first half was half-way through. Rangers, on the other hand, might have taken the lead between then and half-time. Particularly fortunate was one Queen’s Park escape, when Thorton drove almost straight at Mansour, and Dickson kicked the rebound away from the goal-line. Winning got his head cut just before the interval and Rangers were a man short for a few minutes of the second half. A crashing ball from Venters that took Campbell on the body was the big thrill until 27 minutes had gone. When Dodds netted very smartly a headed pass from Duncan. That goal was good enough to win any game. Kinnear lashed a great shot against the far post, but a curious score settled the issue. Simpson and Dodds went up together to a free-kick from Dickson, and the ball seemed to graze the Rangers skipper’s head before entering the net. Not much more than a minute later, Dodds got the third at a corner, and it took a grand save by Dawson to prevent him retiring with a hat-trick to his credit. Rangers’ weakness, as you may have gathered, was in front. Smith was the only one who created difficult situations for the QP defenders, and he had bad luck in not collecting at least one goal. Apart from that, Rangers were not comfortable on the hard ground, and even the dependable Dawson was a bit nervy at times. Queen’s Park were always a shade the better and more energetic team. We can leave it as that – there is no need to individualise
