Match Trivia
It was a one-sided game at Ibrox. Queens Park offered weak opposition, and the smallness of the score is explained by bad shooting, good goalkeeping and a difficult wind. Smith scored Rangers first goal after 33 minutes and McPhail the second less than two minutes later. Smiths shot was from about 14 yards out. I thought it was saveable though the ball went slightly away from the custodian. The second goal was the result of a hot shot by Smith. The goalkeeper saved but could only push the ball to McPhail, who easily placed it in the net. Rangers had practically all the play up to the interval, but not another goal. The Hampden forwards could not get a move on. They were too well countered by the Rangers half-backs. When Buchanan went through with the object of scoring Campbell made a fine save by heading clear. It was good work by both men. From a centre by Archibald, Brown got away a fine header, but custodian Smith saved grandly. The second half was a poor affair. Rangers were never in danger for the Queens Park forward had no penetrative power. Gray and R Hamilton had an easy task. Tom Hamilton was seldom called upon. He must have been cold. It was the Ibrox half-backs who ruled the roost. After the goals were scored the Rangers, forwards seemed to go easy. It required a flare-up by the Hampden attack to give the game some life. In the last half-hour McAlpine and Allan changed places, and then James B nearly caught Tom Hamilton napping. Marshall and McPhail went in for the cross pas frequently, and Archibald and Morton swung the ball a lot, but the finishing was never good. Once, however, Morton, with a quick rising shot on the run, caused Smith trouble he had to spring to the ball, which dropped suddenly after appearing to be going over. Meiklejohn was in his element. He took charge of Cordiner, and occasionally Bremner and Allan. Buchanan and Brown walked through it
