Match Trivia
RG Campbell the ex-Queen’s Park – Celtic back, has distinguished himself as a goal-getter for the Rangers in the several matches when he was tried at centre-forward. At Ibrox against Port Glasgow, he kept the line moving well and scored three goals in the second half. From start to finish the Rangers gave a convincing display, but the opposition was weak. In the first half Kyle and Livingstone each scored, but two goals did not adequately represent the superiority of the home team. Kyle missed a penalty, while just as the whistle went for halftime Campbell landed the ball in the net – a score which did not count. The feature in the second half was the individual work of Campbell. He bustled the Port defence to some tune, and after forcing corners he had the satisfaction of tricking the defence and scoring two splendid goals. The centre also beat Shaw with a ‘penalty’ awarded against Robertson. The Renfrewshire forwards throughout lacked cohesion. Edgar was clever individually, and was eager for work, but he alone could not beat the Rangers, and he found to his surprise that Law was even faster. Thorburn had several good chances, but his fatal habit of hesitating ruined them. At half-back the Athletic were well severed McDonald, Ross and Bullock proving a very fair trio. Ritchie was the better back, Shaw put up a rare defence in goal, several of his saves from Campbell, McDonald and Livingstone being first-class. Apart from Campbell, the cleverness of McDonald the Raith Rover delighted the home crowd. Operating in his favourite position the young ‘Light Blue’ showed that he was well worthy to fill Alex Smith’s place. He dribbled at a fine pace, while his centres were models of accuracy. Law the other recruit gave a pleasing display at right back, and kicked a rare length. Dickie, Galt, Taylor and Jackson were the other Rangers, who showed to advantage
