Match Trivia
In miserably wet weather these teams brought off their return League fixture on Ibrox Park before about 3000 spectators. Losing the toss, Rangers kicked off against a blinding storm of wind and rain, but this did not keep them from at once attacking, and in the first few minutes that had Ward beaten, Speedie opening from a pass of Chalk’s. This early reverse had the effect of making the Port settle down, and play continued fast, although the ground was although against good football. After several unsuccessful attempts to beat Dickie, the Port gained the equaliser through O’Brien, but before crossing over Aleck Smith gave his side the lead, the score at the interval reading – Rangers 2: Port Glasgow 1. On resuming with the wind behind them, Rangers early took matters in hand, and Hamilton scoring in the first minute made the task a hopeless one for their opponents, who although playing a plucky game in the open were unable to get through the defence of the Light Blues. Towards the finish the Port’s defence seemed altogether unable to cope with the smart attack of the Rangers, and goal after goal went up Campbell, Hamilton, Gibson and Speedie (2) being reasonable. Result – Rangers 8: Port Glasgow 1. The gate amounted to £76, and £21 was taken at the stands
