A couple of Willie Findlay goals one in each half won the Glasgow Charity Cup for Rangers in the final at Hampden last night though Thistle were the more methodical side for most of the game. The Firhill forwards had a sweet understanding which Rangers lacked but they couldnt shoot dispute the fact that Young and Woodburn were both shaky and erratic. Rangers attackers were the more dangerous on the move. They knew where the goals lay, and seldom hesitated when near it. Forward of the night, however, was Thistle outside right, Johnny McKenzie. His speed and control were wonderful, and I wonder his Jock Shaw has ever done as much shadow chasing in his career. Cox was easily Rangers best player in defence. Young Beckett didnt get much to do on the wing, but I liked him. There wasnt a failure in the Thistle defence, in which McGowan and Forsyth were best. Thistle had opening frights when a Findlay shot struck Ledgerwood on the leg and went for a corner, and when the keeper had to corner another good effort by the inside right from 30 yards. After a Thistle innings Ledgerwood saved a Thornton header from a Waddell cross, but for the next five minutes it was all Thistle, whose forwards played clever captivating football. Woodburn missed a McCreadie ground cross, and Brown had to throw himself on the ball, and Thistle were so much on top that Ibrox fans shouted disapproval of the play of their team. Then in 18 minutes the unexpected happened. McColl cleverly turned the ball into Thornton. The centre played it back to Findlay who beat Hewitt in a tackle and scored from 20 yards. The Firhill fellows continued to play delightful football and if Howitt had not been so slow in going to meet a Stott cross from the left, they would have claimed the goal they deserved. Rangers were always dangerous raiders, however, especially through the Gillick-like runs of Findlay when long passes were sent through the middle. The exchanges were ken, fast and clean until Woodburn apparently annoyed at Stott for something glaringly fouled the centre. From the free kick Howitt grazed the bar with a grand shot. A thrilling run by McKenzie in which he had Jock Shaw turning in circles, featured the opening minutes of the second half. The wing carried on too far, however, and the ball was over the bye-line when he crossed. Thistle did a spell of attacking but in 14 minutes it was again Rangers who scored. A Gibb clearance when to Waddell who crossed, high into goal, Thorntons header was going across the goal when Findlay rushed in and went down almost on his knees to head the ball into the net. Next minute McKenzie diddled Shaw and shot strongly from a narrow angle, Brown saved, but the referee gave a corner. At the other end Ledgerwood turned a great 15-yard shot from Thornton over the bar to prove that the Ibrox men while not so neat or precise as Thistle were more dangerous near goal
