Match Trivia
This meeting of Rangers and Partick Thistle resulted in a poor, poor game. I might almost say that interest was out of it before it began, for Partick were so weakly represented that it was only in half-hearted fashion that the players entered on their task. If anything more had been required to apply the cold douche it couldn’t have come more quickly, for Riddell’s lovely goal in the first minute settled the match. Without Adams Leitch and Durnin, the Firhill directors asked Morrison, who has been off for months, to go out. He did so, and was back in the pavilion in five minutes, after limping thither. Then Rangers suggested that Patrick should play another man, and Morgan took the field. That made no difference, however, for the Firhill players never struck a game, and most of the play was round Ferguson. Here the Ibrox forwards gave an exhibition of how not to score, although just as the half-time whistle blew the Thistle keeper had a magnificent save. It was much the same story in the second half, only Charles Duncan scored twice. His first goal came from a fine drive, and the other from a header off Croot’s inviting centre. The Leeds City outside left was outstanding, even if he occasionally delayed getting the ball across. Bowie kept the game open with long, profitable passes. Riddell was the best of the half-backs, and Manderson, Blair and Hempsey were safe. McMullan was easily Thistle’s best man, and the Harrises deserve a word of praise. Ferguson had some good saves, but there wasn’t a forward who rose above the mediocrity and listlessness which pervaded the game
