Match Trivia
Army & Navy War Fund, Although the goals were late in coming at Ibrox, Rangers were rather easy winners. Rangers were obliged to do without any of their soldier players, but the side they fielded proved the strength of the Ibrox reserves. The fifteen odd thousand present got very little to enthuse over during the whole of the first half. Never, perhaps was there a quieter opening at any game. Thistle took the field in almost dead silence, and although the champions got a cheer on making the first appearance as titleholders, the game was well in progress ere there was much sound around the ropes. Rangers did most of the pressing during the first half, but goals would not come. Even a penalty kick brought no count. The game was fifteen minutes’ old when Cairns was going straight for goal on his own. He was roughly hustled off the ball, but Jimmy Blair drove the penalty kick straight into Ferguson’s hands. Jimmy Bowie, who was not in form, had a couple of bad misses, but he had also a great drive, which just grazed the corner of the woodwork. Hart, who was a bit ‘fankled’ once or twice, had two great drives, but Ferguson always was handy, and although the force of one of the shots caused him to drop, he cleared the line. Thistle were seldom really dangerous, yet Rangers were fortunate when Manderson got in his head on the goal line with Lock down and well beaten. After a rather dull half, the teams crossed over with no goals. On restarting, Rangers came away with a bang, but from six yards out Hart shot straight art Ferguson, who held easily. For half an hour Rangers more than held their own, but goals they could not get until Cairns, the best forward afield, forced through with the assistance of Hart, the inside man finishing smart work by scoring a good goal. Seven minutes from time Hart added a second, and a third in the closing minutes. Both looked simple points, but were, nevertheless, cleverly taken. The winners were best served by Manderson, Blair, Dixon, Cairns, Hart and Archibald. Thistle’s scratch forward line was not a success. McMullan hadn’t a superior in either middle line, and McLaughlin and Bulloch, together with Ferguson, made a good defence. The sum taken amounted to £578, all of which goes to the War Fund
