Match Trivia

If the 30,000 spectators who were at Ibrox Park did not see any goals scored in the first half, they saw as many thrills crowded into forty-five minutes as has been seen there this season. Right away Cunningham tested Campbell. At the other end – at both ends, in fact – McMenemy played up to his best standard, and his heady work was in evidence in leading out and distributing in almost every movement of the Partick Thistle forwards. McQueen had a heavy handful in Blair and Kinloch, the former sending in some excellent centres, which Kerr failed to turn to good account. Robb was given full scope to display his goalkeeping abilities, and these were of the best. Bulloch was the safety value in front of Campbell, and a great shot by Muirhead was charged down by Crichton, who with Harris, seemed to have had the measure of Morton and Cairns for a time. If the opening half had been strenuous, the start of the second was veritable scorcher. Not only did the ‘Light Blues’ put on a couple of goals within twenty minutes, but Cunningham had two great efforts, either of which, or both might easily have beaten a less able goalkeeper than the old Liverpool custodian. A ‘scrum’ had taken place in the mouth of the Thistle goal, but it was left to Archibald to give the ball the finishing touch. That was at the end if ren minutes, and the sting had gone out of the ‘Jags’. In ten minutes more, following severe pressure by the home forwards, Archibald accepted an accurate cross from Morton, and drove hard past Campbell into the net. Robb was not often tested after that. A minute before the close Cunningham scored the best goal of the match from far out, when Campbell saw the ball swerve into the far corner out of his reach. Hurricane football was the order, and both goalkeepers and the four backs came out of the ordeal with flying colours. Rangers had the pull both intermediate and forward. McMenemy was the old, artful dodger, and Blair ably seconded his efforts. Cunningham and Archibald clicked as to the manner born, and in the later stages the other Ibrox forwards gave of their best.
