Match Trivia
Heres sympathy for Partick Thistle. They could have been doing without the self-inflicted injuries to McCrindle and Johnstone, for Rangers were a team which would have been hard to beat in any circumstances. It was far and away the best exposition I have seen them give in this campaign. Johnstones had injury in saving a shot by Kinnear happened when Rangers were putting on the fourth goal Venters got the return and scored but it was none the less regrettable. McCrindle got his hurt before Rangers had scored their first-half goal, and he afterwards changed places with Linton, which undoubtedly weakened the attack. Partick had their bright moments in attack, but Rangers held a definite advantage in front. The line had balance, and some of the tactical passing was real cute. The star piece, however, was the raiding by Kinnear, and for once, in a way, McSpadyen had to take second place as a spectacular speed merchant. Brown and McPhail kept plying Kinnear with the ball, and he revelled in it. That run almost half the length of the field which brought the second goal, made the crowd roar. Thornton had a whole quiversful of daring moves, and Venters was right on the top of his game a glutton for work and an attentive partner for Waddell. At sending alone the pass, Symon excelled. He put scarcely one wrong. I put down the comparative subject of the McSpadyen-McKennan wing to the strategic defence of Shaw. He went out for the ball every time, and in this way contrived to prevent the Thistle pair from operating effectively. Particks defence did all they could to stop the inroads of the Ibrox forwards, but they were not quite good enough. McPhail scored in 19 minutes, after he and Thornton had gone through together. Partick made a fight of it until coming on to the interval, when Rangers power began to tell. Eight minutes after the turn-round, Kinnear made one of his many flashing incursions on the wing and shot. Johnstone knocked the ball into the air, and Thornton went up to it and headed into the net. Eleven minutes later Gray placed a free kick, and Venters scored a third. The fourth originated from another Kinnear gallop and shot. In saving, Johnstone injured his hand. Venters got the return and hit it. Johnstone again returned it, and Venters drove it home. Johnstone had to go off, and McLeod kept goal until the finish. Two minutes from the end, Partick got a penalty, and McKennan converted as usual. The Referee had a good match.
