Match Trivia

Rangers were a better team than Partick thistle at Ibrox. Play never reached top-hole standard, and the Thistle at no period looked like bagging the points. The Light Blues did much more of the pressing in the first half, and Stewart was kept busy, but he had no real difficulty in stopping the ‘shots,’ which were mostly from long range. McLean troubled him most with a brace of beauties. The Thistle backs were not steady. Bulloch miskicked more than once, and on one occasion his mistake was almost fatal. Pearson, loaned by Tottenham Hotspur, at right back, was obviously untrained, and could not do himself justice. He fluked often, and presented the home left with opportunities, which, however, were nit accepted. At the Rangers’ end there was little stir, the defence rather easily holding an erratic forward line. Once Bowie had what seemed to be a pinch, but he failed from very short range, with only Hempsey to beat. There was no goals in this period, a circumstance which flattered the Thistle, whose goalkeeper had thrice as much to do as had the Ibrox custodian. Rangers were also the stronger side in the second half, but they seldom touched championship form. Thistle struggled hard, without making much impression on the Light Blues’ defence, which, at times, did not appear to be extra sound. There was a lack of unity in the ‘Jags’ attack, caused to some extent by the breaking-up tactics of Dixon. Hempsey was never seriously threatened. At the other end Stewart was kept very lively. The Rangers’ wingers’ sent across several dangerous balls, and with the Thistle backs still under par it looked odds on goals coming. For long, however, the defence held out. A shot by McLean had Stewart beaten, but the crossbar saved the ‘Jags’ bacon. Then came a couple of goals by McLean, and the Thistle were whipped. Both were from passes by Bowie, and in each case Stewart made a brave but futile effort to save. The Rangers were best saved by their half-backs, especially Dixon, who was here, there, and everywhere. McLean got little rope from Hamilton, but he was very dangerous whenever a chance occurred, as his goals show. Bowie was the pick of a forward line that ought to have done better. Stewart was the outstanding man for the Thistle. He kept an admirable goal. Hamilton and McMullan took the eye at half. Bowie made a creditable first appearance at centre-forward. Salisbury was clever on the left, but the van as a whole was far from convincing.
