This tie produced one of the fastest games seen at Ibrox for a long time, and the 14,000 spectators were kept continuously in warm excitement. Thistle’s forwards set the pace a cracker right off. Callaghan swung the ball across to Wilson, who turned it into goal, and Lock saved only at the expense of a corner. Following another corner, Ballantyne sent in a shot, and Lock being out of his goal, Galt interposed his body, but the ball cannoned off into the net. Rangers retaliated after this disaster, relief coming to Thistle’s defence only when the ball rebounded on Alick Smith into touch. From a free-kick against the visitors, Gordon drove in with great vigour, and Howden, encountering the full force of the shot, was rendered hors de combat for a time. When closely pressed by Robertson, McKenzie gave a weak pass back to Law, and only the latter’s agility and judgment saved the situation. The game now swung round in favour of the Rangers. They concentrated themselves around their opponents’ defence, but the dour defence of Parry, Raisbeck and the backs nullified all efforts. At last the expected goal came. Howden had just stopped a shot, when Hogg rushed in and breasted ball and goalkeeper through. Till half-time repeated efforts were made on both goals without avail. Resuming, Rangers quickly settled, and Gordon twice experienced hard lines in not scoring from good openings contributed by McPherson. Thistle were again strongly in evidence, Callaghan and Ballantyne on opposite wings displaying clever work, and Lock had his hands full. Eventually, after a long struggle, Gordon secured an opening for Hogg, who scored the second and winning goal for Rangers. Thistle netted twice after this, a foul against Robertson for an illegitimate charge nullifying the first; while from a scramble, with the whistle sounding for an obvious accident to McKenzie, the second was also void
