Match Trivia
Played on Ibrox Park, the ground of the Rangers, before between 2000 and 3000 spectators. The heavy rain that fell in the forenoon made the ground soft and the going difficult for the players. In the Rangers team Nicol could not take his place at goal, having hurt his hand, and McAllister, of the second eleven, filled Nicol’s usual place between the posts. The Partick Thistle eleven had McBride as a substitute for Ferguson who was unable to play. Amid rain and a strong breeze, Partick Thistle who last the toss kicked off; but through the exertions of D Gow at the back and McKenzie at front, the ball was brought up to the Thistle ground, and a corner kick gained by the Rangers. However, nothing came of it, as McIntyre sent the ball over the cross-bar while trying to score. The Rangers, who were stubbornly opposed by their rivals, were having the best of the game, but they could not manage to score for all that. Another corner kick fell to the Rangers; but although the ball was well placed again no advantage fell to the ground club. Johnstone got past the half and full backs of the Rangers and McIntyre, in trying to save, sent the ball over the line, the Thistle men securing their first corner kick, an advantage they spoiled however, by sending the ball behind the posts. Some exciting play followed this. Although neither side had as yet scored, the play continued fast and furious. Eaglesham for the Rangers, sent in a beauty, but McCorkindale, the Thistle goalkeeper, saved what would clearly have been a goal for the Ibrox players had the ball not been stopped. In turn Milliken made a good effort for the Thistle, and had the ball fallen a little lower the Rangers would have been in a minority of one goal. However, the Rangers were not to be denied, and considering that they had the wind with them, it was not surprising that they should score the first goal of the game. This they did through the agency of Wyllie, who accompanied by Sloan (both players having joined the Rangers this year), had been doing well during the early portion of the game. In five minutes J Gow scored a second goal for the Rangers, having from the side centred the ball so neatly that it fell right beside McCorkindale, who in trying to save stumbled somewhat, and allowed the ball to pass through unmolested. The Thistle men resisted for a long time a series of attacks on their goal, McCorkindale showing that he was clever between the posts, but when J Gow once more centred the ball well and Sloan headed it through the Partick goalkeeper was not to blame. From a foul near the Rangers posts the Thistle men easily secured their first goal through the aid of McBride, the gaining of the point being loudly cheered by the spectators. Just after this halftime was called, the score standing – Rangers 3 goals; Thistle 1
The Rangers began to press their opponents after the kick-off in the second half, but as the Thistle men settled down the Ibrox backs had to keep a sharp look-out on the movements of the forwards, who were busily engaged trying to get the ball between the posts. The Rangers, however soon altered the venue of play, and too frequently the ball was close to the Thistle goal. Paul, however, came to the relief of his chums, and he was collided with one of the Rangers, and twisting his leg, had to retire to the pavilion. Without their best man the Thistle players were severely handicapped, and just as Paul was returning to the field, J Gow centred the ball to Sloan, who scored the fourth goal for the Rangers amid great applause. It was now clear the Thistle team would suffer defeat, as they had not been showing sufficient form to make up the difference between 4 goals and 1 goal
Persevering the Thistle men put on a second goal, Johnstone doing the needful. McAllister succeeded in saving his charge on more than one occasion, the Partick men being very busy about the Rangers goal, and experiencing more than once pretty hard lines indeed. However, Donald Gow and McFarlane sided by the three good halfbacks of the Rangers club, were too many for their opponents, who though playing a pretty fair game, could not compete against the reorganised Rangers eleven. No further scoring took place, and the result was – Rangers 4 goals; Partick Thistle 2 goals
