Match Trivia

This match was played on the ground of the Rangers at Kinning Park. About 4000 spectators were present. The Notts team was a strong one but the Rangers had two 2nd eleven men in their ranks – McDougall and Campbell. The Rangers won the toss, and Heggie kicked off against a slight wind. For the first few minutes, the home team pressed, and Buchanan and Heggie had easy chances to score. Two corner flag kicks conceded to the visitors were unsuccessful. Attempts to score on the part of the strangers were frustrated by Gow and Cameron, who defended well. When the game was fifteen minutes old a combined run by the Forest front division resulted in a goal for the strangers. After this the Scotchmen occupied the English ground, but the shooting was wild and erratic. Heggie called upon the English custodian two times with swift’s shots, but he managed to clear the ball away. Although acting for the most part in defence the wearers of the red jersey kicked and tackled remarkably well. When halftime arrived the score stood – Notts Forest 1 goal Rangers 0. The strangers began well in the second half and Chalmers had on more than one occasion to punt out smartly. In twenty minutes, through a misunderstanding on the part of the Notts goalkeeper, Heggie scored a goal for the Rangers. This success was received with great cheering, as up to this point the Notts men had had slightly the best of it. This served to increase the interest in the game and play was now very fast. The Notts men began a style of short passing, which was very difficult for the Rangers to stop, and once or twice the centre and left wing of the Forest team got past Gow and McHardy, but Chalmers stepped in and cleared the ball away. This put the light blues on their mettle, and tracks were made for the other end, but the Forrest backs were playing a fine game, and held their men safe. Cameron of the Rangers was now prominent by the clever way he stopped the left wing of the Notts Forest, who in fact could never get past him, Gow by some neat dodging got within shooting distance of the Notts goal, but he was grounded by one of the backs. However, the Rangers got a corner, and the ball being well placed, Pringle cleverly headed it through, thus making the Rangers one goal ahead. After this the stranger’s play fell away considerably, and the Rangers improving all round pressed the Forest. Heggie and Pringle each had a shot, but the keeper punted the ball away. Gow got on the leather and secured a corner. The ball was again well placed and Pringle easily sent it through but unfortunately the leather touched his hand, so the point went for nothing. A minute later the whistle sounded time, and the Rangers were thus hailed the visitors by two goals to one. The play of the Rangers was not nearly so good as that shown against the Blackburn Rovers and but for the impetus inspirited in them by their first goal they would assuredly have been on the losing side. Heggie and McIntyre, of whom great things were expected, were off colour. All round the Forest played a sterling game the three halfbacks showing some splendid tackling powers, and the kicking of the full backs being not unlike Walter Arnott’s style.
