Match Trivia

Kinning Park proved in splendid order for this game, which attracted a good turnout of spectators, considering the extra attractions at Cathkin Park and elsewhere. The match however proved a very hard one all through, and the steady play of the Rangers halfbacks undoubtedly saved the game, as the forwards with perhaps the exception of Peacock, were not playing well together, and innumerable shots at the Northern goal were badly missed. The Rangers lost the toss but there was no wind of nay consequence to favour either of the ends. They kicked off, and a hard run by the bulk of the forwards forced the ball close upon the Northern goal, where one of the defenders sent it over the lines. This caused the first corner-flag kick of the game, which was so well judged that the ball went very close. For some time however the Rangers kept pegging away at the Northern uprights, but a gallant effort on the part of the strangers, led by Crawford, Hutchinson and McKelvie was successful in clearing the lines. After this there was some even play in the centre but again the Rangers pressed their opponents, and several corner-flag kicks fell to them almost in succession, but none too effect owing to the plucky manner in which the Northern goalkeeper and the backs defended their lines, and the careless way in which the defenders attempted to follow u an attack. Haft-time was called without any advantage being gained by the respective elevens. In the second round the Northern had the kick-off, and began pretty well wit a neat run up to the home teams backs, but the ball was soon sent back by Cameron, and the Rangers once more laid siege to the Northern goal, where a run started by Gow on the left was followed up by Buchanan and Peacock when the latter sent the ball through. After the next kick-off the Northern forwards had a very pretty run, and looked like scoring, but at the last moment the ball was taken from McNab by McIntyre. Give and take play followed for a time, but the Rangers again pressed the Northern backs and goalkeeper. The latter, however showed great ability in warding off all attacks and when time was called, the score was unaltered, and stood at one goal to none in favour of the Rangers.
