Match Trivia
Unemployment Refief Fund Match At Ibrox Park, Govan for the benefit of the Glasgow unemployed, estimated attendance 9000, drawings (gate and stands) £230. Newcastle played a beautiful, but somewhat ineffective game in the first half. Their forwards particularly the inside men, were much too clever for the defence, but they did not shoot often as they might have done. Duncan with the finest shot of the match scored the first goal, before McPherson put on the Rangers first point, and Veitch added a second point, Newcastle leading by 2 goals to 1 at the interval. The second half was dull until towards the end. Fifteen minutes from the finish Higgins finished a grand run by scoring a third goal, and Howie shortly after capped a fine combined run by beating McArthur for the fourth time with a 25 yards drive. Rangers were hopelessly outclassed, but Livingstone managed to head a goal for them just before time. The feature of the game was the magnificent play of Newcastle’s inside forwards and Vetch’s play at half-back.
