Match Trivia
A moderate attendance for an evening match witnessed the appearance of the Newcastle team at Ibrox Park last night. The visitors were strongly representing, the only notable absentee being Burgess, the right back, for whom Wilson played, and Aitken the centre-half, whose place was filled by a young English player named Cretney, whom the United have signed on for next season. The Rangers played Howden for Dickie, Crawford for Drummond, Stark for Neil, a junior named Findlay for Hamilton, and Campbell took up A Smith’s place on the left. With a fairish breeze in their favour the Rangers in the first half had the bigger share of the play, and scored twice, Speedie shooting both goals. Kingsley effected several fine saves, but was not so well supported by his backs as he should have been. The visitors got several times near Howden, but met a clever and resolute defence. Crossing over with a lead of two goals, the Rangers continued to play a fast and judicious game, and eventually a penalty kick was given against the United, which Campbell converted. This was the second penalty awarded to the Rangers, the first one occurring in the opening period, but Robertson was not inclined to score, and allowed Kingsley to clear at his leisure. Immediately following the Rangers third goal, the United forwards got well through the Rangers defence, and Peddie with a long shot put on their first, and only goal. Near the finish the United did most of the pressing, but could not score, and an enjoyable game ended in a win for the Rangers by 3 goals to 1. Some clever work was accomplished by teams, the forwards and halves passing cleverly, while the backs tackled, and kicked with strength and judgment. Among the Rangers forwards Campbell was the best especially in his finishing efforts. Speedie shot better than he has done all season, and both Graham and Sharp seemed to know where the goal is. Kingsley however was in splendid form, and took a lot of beating. The United forwards showed a fair turn of speed, but they lacked cohesion, and were never quite able to beat the Rangers half-backs, who were in one of their happiest moods. Robertson was perhaps the speediest player on the field, and his stamina was most pronounced. Ghee and Carr took the eye in the United’s half-back line, and throughout played a smart and very effective game. Smith and Crawford were better than Gardner and Wilson, but all four made comparatively few mistakes. Howden did not get very much to do, but little he got he did well.
