Match Trivia
In dull weather Newcastle United continuing their tour of Scotland met the Rangers at Ibrox Park last night. There was a fair attendance of spectators. Losing the toss Newcastle United kicked off against a strong wind, and for a time could not make much headway, the breaking up tactics of Henderson, Stark and Gibson together with the smart clearing of Speedie and Gilchrist keeping the English forwards at bay. Every opportunity was given Templeton to display his sprinting abilities, but he could not negotiate Speedie who repeatedly had the better of the exchanges with the outside left. On one occasion Appleyard and McColl broke clean though the Rangers defence, but through a misunderstanding Gilchrist recovered and nipped the ball from the foot of the former. A similar incident happened at the other end of the field, but on this occasion Paton catching up an opportune pass from Mackie beat Watts with a fist oblique shot. This was all the scoring in the first half, and at the interval Rangers led by 1 goal. In the second half the Rangers had easily the better of the exchanges, but it was not until close on time that the Light Blues added to their score, Paton again having the destination of beating the English custodian. The result was – Rangers 2 goals: Newcastle United 0 goals
