Tommy Cairns Benefit Match, I took a turn down to Ibrox last night to Tommy Cairns’ match. Everything in the Ibrox garden was lovely. And little wonder – all parties had done well by the plucky Rangers’ forward. A good twenty thousand people responded to his invitation. Newcastle sent up the powerful side promised – their very best; the Ibrox club made but one change and it was unavoidable. McMillan of Clydebank deputised for Alec Archibald. Roughly Tommy will take £1000 out of the game. Only one thing was lacking – a goal. The game which abounded with really clever play would have been the better for a score. This might have brought about the trills all enthusiastic footballers look for. I thought in the second half that the beneficiary might have pushed one home himself. But Tommy did not seem keen. Perhaps he didn’t wish to hurt Jamie Lawrence’s feelings. We enjoyed much the bouts between Alan Morton and Bill McCracken. In the first half the Irish back had perhaps the better of his own particular off-side stunt; after the honours were fairly easy. Rangers had the better of a most enjoyable game. At the close I had a word or two with some of the Scots players in the English team. Stanley Seymour is not quite fir yet after his injury, but James Lawrence is in the pink.
