Match Trivia
Amid the swirling blasts at Ibrox Park a stuffy Motherwell team, containing five young players, almost brought off a surprise. They ran the Rangers to a goal. No club that has appeared on the Rangers ground this season put up a more resolute display than Motherwell. The adverse conditions of wind and heavy ground provided an exacting, even test for the players. The young man Craig, from Saltcoats Victoria, was a second late in getting in his tackle against Henderson when the second half had gone twenty-four minutes. The Ibrox centre profited by the chance to emerge clear and score with a straight drive from fully twenty yards. There was no other goal. This was Craig’s first appearance in a senior League match, and he made quite a decent show against the champions. McClory (goal), McGrath and McCafferty (forwards) are recruits from the junior folds this season, while Stevenson, the inside left, is in his second season. In the absence of Ferrier, McCafferty, who is a right winger, passed muster on the left, although he was short in his crosses. The occasion was notable for the reappearance of Tom Muirhead in the home team. In the place of Meiklejohn at right half, Muirhead displayed his old cleverness and skill, although he was not quite fully trained. In a game of excellent football under difficult conditions, the Rangers were brilliantly held by Little and Frame at back, and by a consistently good half-back trio, with Greenshields excelling. No back on the field was tested as Frame was for twenty minutes. All through he proved as sound in defence as his partner, Little, who was in great form. The Motherwell forwards were well led by Ferguson, who like McGrath and Tennant, went very near to scoring. McGrath, who hails from Duntocher, is one of the most promising inside rights in the game. The Rangers did well to win against a restless team, and in Cunningham they had the most untiring and successful forwards on the field. Archibald’s co-operation with his partner and his strong raiding made this wing conspicuous all the time. The rangers’ backs came well out of the struggle. The nonchalant manner in which he took flying shots high up and clutched the low balls gave distinction to McClory’s goalkeeper.
