Match Trivia

Hampton, the Motherwell custodian, although losing seven goals at Ibrox, gave a fine display, and from this it will be gathered that the home forwards were fairly in the mood. Their work in the last half-hour of the game, during which they rattled on five of their goals, was simply irresistible, and through their play was of a very attractive nature. Motherwell gave a display at the start which did not augur such a one-sided result. Indeed, before the home team settled to their game they played through the Ibrox defence several times in fine style, and were a trifle unlucky not to score. Right through the first half their manipulation in the open gave the Rangers defence a good deal of trouble, and they occasionally had Law and Campbell in a tangle; but it was in finishing that the disparity between the sides was most apparent. Frequently all they wanted was a decent shot to cap their outfield work, but their efforts at goal were most feeble. Even at this stage, however, the Rangers forwards were superior in combination and much more businesslike in their efforts at goal. After about twenty minutes’ play Reid accepted a perfect pass from Smith and opened the scoring. It was close on the interval before the Motherwell goal again fell, after very smart work between Gordon and Hogg. The half-back rattled the bar with his parting shot, but Reid, lying handy, scored from the rebound. For ten or fifteen minutes after resuming the Ibrox men played as if they considered the game already settled, and at this stage the visitors were quite value for a goal. It came from a penalty seemingly granted for one of their players, who was forcing his way through being illegitimately kept from the ball which Lock reached just in time. Following this, Motherwell, from another Reid, almost equalised, and then the transformation came. A free kick was awarded the Rangers just outside the penalty area and Chapman gave Hamilton absolutely no chance. From this point there was no holding of the Ibrox forwards, who gave a very taking display. Bennett was in great dribbling form, and after smart leading-out work he sent the ball well up the centre and there was a race for possession between Reid and Yuille of the Rangers and the opposing goalkeeper. Flustered by the on-rushing forwards, Hampton clean missed the ball, and Reid had no difficulty in putting on the fourth goal. Chapman had the next with a very clever header from a corner, well placed by Alex Smith. Hampton was kept busy and defended wekk. He distinguished himself by clearing an unexpected high shot from Reid, turning it over the bar, but in another sprint out for the ball Hogg got there first and drove hard past him into the net. Reid completed the rout close on time. The losers did not play so badly as the score would indicate. While they nullified much good play in the open by poor shooting, they certainly had hard lucky frequently in not counting from good efforts, and they were up against formidable opponents in rampant form. Their outstanding men were Hampton in goal, Kelly at back, and Johnstone forward, the latter giving a capital exhibition and proving rather elusive for Campbell, who was cumbersome in his movements. For the winners Lock did some good saving. The play of Law and Campbell was not up to the standard of the rest of the eleven, both kicking poorly at times. The men in the intermediate line only showed their best form in the last thirty minutes. The understanding between Bennett and Smith was pronounced, and Reid was at the top of his form.
